Heat Wave
It is thick and sticky and hot
Like walking around in snot.
The Ohio River Valley feels
like walking on the Devil’s hills.
I’ve heard of Hell’s front porch
and here we sit and together scorch.
We have had to learn the heat index
because it trumps the temperature’s effects.
About climate change, we don’t worry.
When it is mentioned the politicians scurry.
Ten such days this year we can bear
but what about 2050? We don’t care.
So very sad that despite overwhelming evidence about climate change, there are still too many who choose to bury their heads in the sand, which if nothing else, should let them know that it is. I look back to the time when I was a child and we never had a fan or an air conditioner, and never remembering it being as stifling as it is now. Yes, it got very hot, but the pollution wasn’t nearly as dreadful as it is now. Every time I read about either a rollback or a proposal to change regulations with the EPA, I shake my head and wonder how anyone could possibly think it wouldn’t be even more harmful. We used to call it the three H s- Hazy, Hot, and Humid. Now we have another H to add, Harmful.

Super hot here in north-central Illinois still. Near where i went to school in southern Illinois is a nature place called Devil’s Kitchen. I’d hate to feel the heat there! 🙂
