The coronavirus is all over the news today. It is important and it is wreaking havoc in China, but I wonder why it is of more interest in this country than plain old flu. Many people refuse to be vaccinated against the flu for various personal reasons. I think seasonal flu needs more respect in view of these statistics:

Roughly 200,000 people are hospitalized with the flu each year in the United States, and about 35,000 people die.

  1. I have thought about this and have made some assumptions re:news. It might be because it is new, so getting more headlines. However, it pales in comparison to the flu outbreaks here. People are dying…I know far too many people who do not get the flu shot and it bothers me greatly. Every door know they touch, push bar to get in and out of somewhere, grocery carts, have all been touched and maybe by someone who is seriously ill. Some folks are delusional, think they are immune from illness. It breaks my heart because for the most part, these inoculations prevent further spread of the disease. I am not talking about those who are allergic to the vaccine. I am preaching to those who think only of themselves and not how they may actually harm those they love because of their stubborn refusal to do what they can to prevent this illness.

  2. I have to agree with you about the flu which is quite dangerous. I am frustrated that several members of my own family won’t get the vaccine. Makes me wish in the darkest recesses of my soul that they’d get it once just to see how miserable and potentially serious it can be. But of course I didn’t just write that horrid confession!
